It all started with a love for pie and a dream to create a safe, loving space for people to be fully expressed.
Davey and Amy met on the steps of a local community center called the WOW Hall in Eugene, Oregon in 2022. As they got to know one another they found that both their grandparents were a safe haven for them growing up. Amy had a deep connection with her grandfather and Davey had a deep connection with his grandmother. That is where their love for one another flourished; from that safe loving space their grandparents gave them, and they knew they wanted to create that for others and didn’t know how.
Amy shared with Davey about how she took care of her grandfather while he was passing from cancer.
Amy’s grandfather Donald Felthauser, taught her how to bake growing up. He was a cook in the navy and she would laugh as he described making 2,000 pancakes every morning! She would go to her grandparents house for the summers as a child and described it as the most nourishing time of her life. “He taught me how to crack an egg in each hand and would just giggle as I made a mess everywhere. He was like that, patient and kind.” She describes as she reminisces. She attributes going to culinary school because of all the fun they had in the kitchen together.
Later when her grandfather grew weak from the cancer, spreading through his body, he could barely move let alone eat. She asked him if she could make him anything and he replied “apple dumpling”, his favorite. She went into the kitchen and proceeded to do so. As he took the littlest of bites she shares, “he made this ‘mmm’ sound that just warmed my heart. I describe it as a moment of relief in a sea of suffering. I gave that to him, and that is what Second Breakfast is. It is so much more than a pie shop. It is love.”‘
After sharing that story with Davey he reminisced about his grandmother Ila La Rose, who gave him the same unconditional love. She would make him homemade raspberry jam every year and understood how love can be transferred through food. He was also heartbroken when she passed and created the idea of passing on that unconditional love to others and keep their memories alive.
Amy and Davey were working regular jobs and would make pie to keep that love alive. They would eat pie at night and laugh. It brought so much joy. She started bringing them to work and eventually selling them to her coworkers. That is when Second Breakfast was born. Davey said,”We should do it, we should start a pie company!” And so they did. Second Breakfast was officially born in January of 2023, through faith, love and a dream. They are out to create an extraordinary experience of love through time-honored, traditional baking techniques passed down from the generations before.
All for the love of pie. <3
